What I was doing

I haven’t published much designs lately, it is because I was busy preparing Christmas gifts. Other than buying some stuffs from tshirtdujour.com, I crocheting scarves for friends and family, and a pair baby socks for my friend’s new born baby. They are asking to sell it on etsy, but I am not sure I have enough time for that since I am working on my gallery in Zazzle now.

Anyway I just quit my job, couldn’t stand the discrimination anymore! I came from Malaysia to work for them as designer. But they never respect me, and treated me badly compare with other colleagues. I was crying today when I got back, I just couldn’t believe that I let myself went through all those shits. It is difficult to live without pride and dignity, being discriminated everyday also created a lot of pain for me.

18 months of tortures come to the end lastly! I know I should just let go and live better, but it is difficult not to review what I had been through when it comes to an ending.

I am going back to Malaysia next month to celebrate Chinese New Year, then i will come back to Austin to further study after I got my VISA. I will never want to work for that company anymore! Not anymore! It was the most hurtful working experience for me.

Clement I am so sorry you had to go through such a bad experience… Why did they hire someone from the other end of the world, namely a talented and special person, if they cannot respect this person? People don’t always appreciate difference, especially in the work place where there is so much stupid competition. I’ve experienced discrimination more than once; I have quit two wonderful jobs and lost a third one for this reason. I am Greek and have worked in France and in Germany - the foreign accent, the language difficulties, or just the culture differences have sometimes been perceived as “weaknesses” or like something “exotic”, to laugh at. Most of the time people who discriminate have never left their country and don’t know how difficult it is to integrate into a new culture and learn a new language and lifestyle - so they don’t have the right to judge.

I also often had difficulties finding a new job, even for jobs like php programer, graphic designer, photoshoper, they expected me to speak perfectly their language! What for? To write scripts in French or to design trees in German? Bad work experiences was one of the reasons I decided to work as a freelancer. Clients can also treat you badly sometimes, but then you are free to refuse working for them. I had to do this once, I told the lady I am fully booked for the next 12 months (in fact I didn’t even have the money to pay my rent, but I just couldn’t see her face any more).

Anyway! Perhaps this experience makes you create a new, cute design against discrimination, like a white bear hugging a brown bear? Or a normal tooth brush hugging an electric tooth brush while Colgate is hugging Oral-B?

I am a big believer in silver linings. I hope you will find this one soon.

I can’t blame anything on discrimination in my case, just the American way of eating employees up and spittin them out. I was laid off May 1st and had to start my next chapter. Eighteen years, numerous 50/60 hour weeks and two lay offs.

It was hard at first but now I couldn’t be happier. $:-\$ ” Well I could be happier but still things are looking up!

Ina, Thanks for sharing your experience with me, I am totally understand how you felt!

I had language problems too, they always laughed at me when I said certain words…. But I am sure they would sounds even funnier if they tried to speak Chinese.

Anyway it is almost over now and I am glad I learn so much from all those bad experiences. Thanks so much and wish you to have a great holiday!
